Multimedia Barista

Oksana Silantieva
Interactive training game on multimedia storytelling and project design. Instead of listening to a lecture, participants work in teams and build a multimedia project step by step.
The game starts with a simple coffee metaphor: just as a drink is made from different ingredients in a particular combination, a multimedia story is built from different content elements and formats. Participants first learn to recognise these “ingredients”, then apply them to their own project.

During the session, teams choose a topic, define the target audience, formulate the main angle and explain why the story matters to that audience. They then identify the people and groups involved, generate questions, build the logic of the story and select the most appropriate multimedia formats for each part.
The result is a visual storyboard combining content and format. Teams pitch their projects, receive feedback from other participants, test their ideas from the audience’s perspective and refine the final concept.
The game has been delivered to both novice and experienced journalists, editors, bloggers and other content creators in more than 50 cities across 9 countries. Training materials and participant handouts are available in both Russian and English.
Multimedia Barista was developed by Oksana Silantieva, multimedia journalism trainer and media educator, as a practical learning-by-doing format for teaching multimedia storytelling and project design.
